“Barbie Girl” was a song released by dance-pop group Aqua in 1997, serving as the third single from their debut album Aquarium.

Due to its explicit language and references to Barbie’s sexual nature, the song “Barbie Girl” by Aqua ultimately resulted in a lawsuit being filed against the group and their record label by Mattel.

Mattel v. MCA Records insisted that the group and their label deliberately violated the Mattel trademark and turned Barbie into a sex object. The judge finally dismissed the lawsuit, ending his ruling with advice to “chill out.”

The group’s biggest hit single in the U.S to date, “Barbie Girl” dominated the international music market following its release in 1997 and received recognition at the Danish Music Awards. The song was also directed by Peder Pedersen and Peter Stenbæk and became widely popular thanks to significant airplay on MTV.
